Sumner County ground, from the river to the Rim
Sumner County is rolling limestone farmland along the Cumberland River and Old Hickory Lake, with the same rock-in-the-trench conditions as the rest of Middle Tennessee. Growth along the Highway 109 and Vietnam Veterans corridors keeps bringing new industrial and residential load that needs gas.
North of town the ground rises toward the Highland Rim and the Kentucky line, with more grade and more spring-fed creeks. South and west, toward Hendersonville and Old Hickory Lake, the corridors are tighter and the crossings are mostly roads and utilities rather than open ground.
Highway 109, Vietnam Veterans, and the Cumberland
Highway 109 and Vietnam Veterans Boulevard are the two big corridors through Sumner County, along with US 31E and the state routes that tie Gallatin to Portland, Westmoreland, and Lebanon. Crossings on those go through TDOT; county roads go through Sumner County. Most are bores with a traffic-control plan, and we know the people who issue the permits because we have been pulling them for years.
The Cumberland River and Old Hickory Lake form the county's southern edge, and Station Camp, Bledsoe, and Drakes creeks cut across it. Stream crossings go through TDEC, larger ones with the Corps. A CSX line runs through Gallatin, and railroad crossings carry their own agreement and flagging.
Crossings are usually where a pipeline schedule is won or lost, which is why a pipeline contractor working in Gallatin should have the permits moving the day the route is set. Our post on how pipelines cross roads and railroads walks through the methods, and horizontal directional drilling is the tool for the river and highway crossings that cannot be open-cut.
The contractor down the road
For a project in Gallatin or the surrounding county, you are hiring the contractor down the road: distribution extensions for new development, station and tie-in work, and the crossings that come with a fast-growing county. The owners who run the company are in the building, so questions get answered the same day.
Sumner County has been one of the faster-growing counties in the state, and gas load follows rooftops and industrial parks. The typical scope here is a distribution extension or a new tie-in and meter station for a commercial or industrial site, often with a highway or creek crossing in the middle of it.
A job that runs straight out of the yard
A Gallatin job runs out of the yard. Equipment is staged here, crews are local, and an owner can be on site in minutes. That removes mobilization from the schedule entirely and leaves permits and materials as the only real lead items, which we start the moment the route is set.
The construction sequence is the same one we run on a 40-mile line, just shorter: clear, string, weld, coat, trench, lower in, backfill, test, restore. Because we are working in our own county, restoration gets extra attention. These are our neighbors, and a right-of-way that heals cleanly is the standard we hold everywhere because it is the standard we hold here.
Where the crews come from does not change how the job runs. Pipeline construction in Gallatin follows the same sequence we run everywhere, and capacity comes from spreads and crews sized to the route, and the same safety program and superintendents run every site. There is a longer walk-through of the whole sequence in how a pipeline project comes together.
Who we build for in our own county
In and around Gallatin we build for the gas utilities extending service to new development, for industrial and commercial sites needing a tie-in and meter station, for power generation projects in the county, and for EPC and design-build firms delivering sites along the 109 and Vietnam Veterans corridors.
- Data center developers who need gas service on the site's schedule, not the utility's.
- Power generation projects, from tie-ins and meter stations to new transmission pipe.
- Gas utilities and midstream operators extending or rebuilding their systems.
- EPC and design-build firms that need a self-perform pipeline partner for a scope inside a larger project.
If you are comparing pipeline contractors for a project in Gallatin, our guide to hiring a pipeline contractor covers the questions that matter in any state, and a privately owned contractor means the person who can say yes to your schedule is the one you are talking to.
